The Weekly Historian, #19
Hello historians and history lovers!
History Headlines
There is a common misconception that historians already know everything there is to know about the past. This is wildly inaccurate! Mindy Weisberger reports on a recent DNA analysis of Jamestown that reveals a 400-year-old scandal. Evidence now suggests that Captain William West, who enjoyed a high-status life largely devoid of impropriety, was probably the illegitimate son of a “spinster aunt.” Check out the article and learn about this interdisciplinary project that involves historians, archaeologists, evolutionary biologists, and more.
Jobs and Opportunities
Research shows that many individuals only apply for a job if they meet 100% of the requirements. Women, people of color, and other historically marginalized groups are less likely to apply for a job unless they meet every requirement. What’s my point? You should still apply for a job you want even if you’re only officially 75% qualified. Employers often make exceptions for the right candidate.
